Program Overview

GAF's Sierra Leone Internship Program began in 2008 to create awareness in highly talented and passionate youth who intend to change the world through social action. GAF interns work at the primary care clinic and with the community-based malnutrition project in partnership with UNICEF.

GAF offers two internships: Summer and post-bac programs. Both combine clinical, administrative, and epidemiological responsibilities. Interns shadow a doctor and/or nurse as well as help run the clinic’s pharmacy and laboratory. They gather health statistics at the clinic and in the community. Interns travel to communities of amputated civilians, collect data, and assist with its first-level analysis. They also have data collection and reporting responsibilities for the malnutrition project.

Post-Bac interns receive added administrative responsibilities, gradually assuming a lead role in Sierra Leone. Applicants must have prior international experience, a college education or greater, and an ability to live in remote regions.
