Meet the Interns

Class of 2009

Chris Yarnell is a Princeton University senior earning his degree in Mathematics. He was a medical assistant in France, and summer research student in Canada before joining GAF. He's won Princeton's Shapiro Award for Academic Excellence.

Katie Hsih is a Princeton University senior earning her degree in Operations Research and Financial Engineering. She assisted in researching a framework for impact evaluation in post-disaster settings and was first exposed to medicine in developing countries in China before joining GAF. Katie fulfills her Global Health Certificate Program research requirement through our Kono District health education impact evaluation.

Chris & Katie conducted a health education impact evaluation in Kono's amputee and surrounding communities, which included community education and surveying. They also developed a business plan for the palm oil farm that will be established to help fund the clinic's operating costs. Another project underway is implementing an electronic medical records system at the Kono Clinic, as well as assisting in technical support and education.

 

Class of 2008

Lois Park is a Swarthmore College junior earning her degree in biology and public policy. Lois received a scholarship from the Lang Center for Civil and Social Responsibility to conduct a community-based research project. Lois spent her summer in the field with GAF nurses and village health promoters assessing Sierra Leone's most vulnerable populations. Lois returned in 2009 to research community-based nutrition interventions.

Lucas Baradello is a Princeton University junior earning his degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of International Affairs and Public Policy and a certificate of studies in East Asian Studies. Lucas co-founded Juvenis, a U.S. non-profit, designed as a social networking web portal for the United States latino youth immigrant population. Lucas will become a project manager at the Kono Amputee Clinic. He began in October 2008.

Anne Kern is a UCSF medical student, who graduated from Princeton University with a degree in East Asian Studies. Anne was a Princeton-In-Asia Fellow who taught English in China. Afterwards, she worked in administrative management for Wild China, an American adventure-travel company. Anne transitioned Wild China through an expansion period. Anne consulted and remodeled the general administration of GAF in Sierra Leone during the spring of 2008. Below is an excerpt of her blogging.
