Shouldering commitment to healthcare for war victims

After the war, Sierra Leone's Truth and Reconciliation Committee reported that amputees and their dependents should receive free, life-long healthcare starting in 2004. Since 2007, we have shouldered this responsibility at our clinic in Kono District, and up until 2009, the government had yet to act.

Closing the health delivery gap from clinic to home

We identified that the health delivery chain was failing between the clinic and home. Stigma, transportation fees, and critical illness were among reasons that HIV/AIDS patients didn't visit the clinic. In 2009, we bridged the gap by employing HIV-positive community health workers to make daily visits to these people.

Community Health Workers

Community health workers increase healthcare access to people living in poverty, acting as the "infrastructural bridge" from the clinic to the home. Many of these people have chronic diseases such as HIV or hypertension, which require routine medical supervision from laypeople.

Sustaining the Community

We farm so that palm oil can nourish our sickest patients, create jobs for people living with HIV/AIDS, and sustain their salaries as community health workers. We call this new social entrepreneurial organization, Community Health Workers Forever, and in 2009, we launched our pilot in Kono District.

Modeling health as a human right

We believe Sierra Leone - the world's poorest country - can make health a human right. We provide vulnerable people - amputees, children, people living with HIV/AIDS and the destitute poor - with access to free care. We provide every other person with access to affordable care. That's how we model health as a human right. Read more about health as a human right
